Author’s Note While USSC cases present interesting legal issues, there is so much more to them. I was inspired to think of ways that the people and entities involved could also have a voice. This project consists of five (5) activities: Legislature, Debate, Journalism, Presentation and Moot Court (appellate argument). These five activities give your students a variety of ways to explore the cases, events and people.
The Cases:
Obergefell v. Hodges (same-sex marriage) is the anchor case (full Moot Court materials included). There are also ten (10) other important cases from the 2014 term (October 2014 through June 2015):
- Alabama Legislative Black Caucus v. Alabama (Racial gerrymandering)
- Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (Reapportionment)
- EEOC v Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc. (Employment discrimination based on religion)
- Elonis v US (Internet free speech)
- Glossip v. Gross (Death penalty)
- Holt v Hobbs (Religious freedom in prison)
- King v. Burwell (Obamacare subsidies)
- Rodriguez v. U.S. (Drug-dog-sniffing traffic stop)
- Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs v. Inclusive Communities Project (Housing discrimination)
- Walker v. Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans (Confederate flag on license plates)
Materials include several activities to explore these cases, teacher and student instructions, assessment and evaluation tools, resources and standards (Common Core and others)
